Reports say Aug. 23 strike may be stopped as many non-union workers join the union. In Seattle the Isaquah coal strike is seen as partly sympathetic with Northwest labor shortages boosting bargaining power.
A Fort Sheridan test of Casimer Zeglen’s bullet-proof cloth used a Krag Jorgensen rifle. At 400 yards the first bullet hit the cloth center and did not penetrate beyond the first layer. Officers deemed the performance a triumph and fulfilled the inventor’s claims.
Official dispatches report the August 7 capture of Abu Hamed by Anglo Egyptian forces under Colonel Hunter after house to house fighting. Dervish losses include 21 killed and 61 wounded, with many prisoners and captured arms. Also notes a Cuban insurgent victory and political intrigue in France.
At O h o fusion splits marked by a fractured state convention. Coxey heads the Populist ticket with Morris Whitcomb for lieutenant governor and other officers named as the ticket is set amid charges of bribery by Republicans and calls for an inquiry into convention corruption.
