A B Pesslee is back home from Stillwater and Sheriff Johnson is back after a short illness. The notes reflect local officials resuming duties following time away.
Reports from Albert Lea Enterprise describe Professor Schelde returning to Blooming Prairie, Anna Leach visiting her aunt in Stillwater, and Mrs Baubler planning a move to Madison Wisconsin. Fred Lawyer moved to hospital. German society initiates two members. G I G to B of L E meets August 11. In Charlestown a prison escape ends with Herbert Willis fatally wounded and brother Edward wounded after attempts to seize guards.
On August 11 in Ohio the anti fusion faction, led by John Tiffin and A. S. from New Philadelphia, formed a temporary masthead and then moved to permanent organization after seating all fusion delegates. The move signals a coup to align with Republican opposed civil service reform and strengthen their control over the state Populist body.
The Republican convention in Ville Kentucky was peaceful and orderly with no major clashes. G Bailey of Magoffin County was nominated for clerk of the court by acclamation, and state and national actions were indorsed while civil service debates arose but produced little enthusiasm.

The Wisconsin Pharmaceutical association held its annual convention in N Bay Wisconsin opening with reports from committees and progress on officer reports in the forenoon. In the afternoon the body discussed presidential reports and policy changes. The event marks a key gathering of state pharmacists and industry observers.
In Chicago the Interstate Commerce Commission reopened the Sioux City started case against Chicago rail lines over Northwestern Iowa to Chicago rates. A. C. Bird of the Milwaukee St Paul line testified as to rate basis while W. J. Edmunds of the Northwestern Iowa Grain Shippers association cited bills of lading showing freight costs exceeding market returns, including a carload oats with 1.69 freight on 44.60 sale.
The September wheat market reached the season's high in New York trading at 84 4 as selling was scarce. Chicago futures closed near 78 5 with a two cent daily rise while Minneapolis cash bids No 1 hard at 87 7 and No 1 northern at 86 1 2.
Maprio reports the queen regent decreed military honors for the funeral of Senor Canovas del Castillo. The interment will be in the pantheon with services in all churches and three days of official mourning across the country.
Over 100 bidders gathered at the state capitol commission rooms to review bids for the new capitol building superstructure and the concreting of the sub-basement. Bids ranged from 1,055,514 dollars for New Hampshire white granite to 474,400 dollars for Bedford or Berea sandstone. A decision will take several days.
The government will release the schooner Blanche Borgan detained at Bridgeport Conn as a suspected filibuster. Captain Verry, at the Bridgeport ammunition works, said the ammunition found on the Morgan belonged to the government and was being shipped to New York.
The North Dakota state board of equalization completed review of real property and reduces values across the state by an estimated total of eight million dollars. Largest decreases come from central and western counties.
More than 200 coal diggers from nearby mines joined strikers in Charleston as of August 11. All New River mines are idle except the Royal mine, which continues to operate.
The steamer Britannic bound up struck Lock 6 at Welland canal in Fort Dauphine Ontario and tore away four gates. Navigation is stopped and authorities cannot yet say when service will resume.
The Alaska Fleet steamer Mexico was struck and went to the bottom of the Pacific. Passengers and crew abandoned in small boats and were landed safely.
The steamer Mexico struck West Devil's rock in heavy fog on Aug 5 while entering Dixon Entrance from Sitka, sank stern first in 500 feet of water after two hours. Captain and crew kept calm. passengers and crew saved with baggage in small boats. Mexico had left Seattle July 27 with 263 passengers bound for the Klondike gold fields.
Secretary Bliss issues a warning to prospectors bound for the Klondike urging delays until spring. He notes 3,000 people and 2,000 tons of baggage are awaiting at White Pass and warns of exposure and danger. The Dawson journey would face 700 miles of Yukon navigation with scarce transport and possible river ice closure.
Caro Illinois August 11 late details from the towboat Fritz disaster report eleven lumber handlers aboard at the time are missing. They are believed to have been scalded or drowned with some possibly jumping overboard to escape the heat and flames.
Governor Tanner in Illinois honors South Dakota’s requisition for Henry E. Bailey, wanted in Pennington County for embezzlement as assignee of Rabbit Valley Horse Ranch funds. About $19,000 of the company money was paid out after a court order and bank failure in 1893. Bailey runs an insurance business in Chicago now.
London Aug 11 special from Brussels reports Lieutenant Gerlach, Belgian Antarctic expedition leader, is disappointed by limited space on the Belgica and has declined Dr. Robert Cook's offer to join the voyage with Peary's companion.
Samuel Gompers arrives and pledges to go to West Virginia as an organizer if directed by President Ratchford. Ex-president of the United Mine Workers Phil H. Penna and Indiana operators held a private conference with Ratchford. Local labor leaders say West Virginia miners are hard to win over due to limited economic education and weak sentiment.
Mechanics Savings Building and Loan Association, once viewed as solvent and long established in Illinois, is revealed to carry a deficit of 165 253 dollars per state auditor Edward Glennon. Stockholders, many in modest means, react with consternation as scrutiny into dummy loans is promised to intensify.
Captain Mortensen of the bark Ansgar bound from Dublin to Onega at the mouth of the Onega river reports that on July 13, two days east of North Cape in Arctic waters he saw a collapsed balloon he believes to be Herr Andree's.
F Y Robertson president of the suspended First National bank of Kearney was arrested here from Forest City Missouri charged with swearing to false statements to secure large county deposits which were lost when his bank failed. The arrest has caused a big sensation in banking circles.
A lamp exploded in J. Herring barber shop in Greenwood Steuben county setting the business district ablaze. Firefighters from Osmayo Canisteo and Hornellsville arrived by special trains and saved most of the village leaving only two hardware stores spared.
In Philadelphia on August 11 1911 the Universal Peace Union offered its services as arbitrator in the coal strike. President Love led a committee that mailed a letter to representatives of operators and miners seeking an arbitration role.
In Crystal Falls Michigan on August 11 the entire underground force walked out seeking higher wages. Superintendent Bennett persuaded the workers to resume after promising to present their demand to the company.
In Wheeling West Virginia on August 11 the Boggs Run miners have left work and the Wege miners join the strike. The Heath Erington mines supply steamboats with coal and a fuel shortage for boats now looms.
Aug 11 reports a tense scene in Coffen Illinois as 500 miners drill in a camp near town and reinforcements gather. Mrs Bradley and wagonloads bring provisions from Staunton and Mount Olive as the sheriff orders 150 armed guards and asks Nokomis for 50 more.
Springfield miners will march to Decatur with 700 strong. Sheriff Nicholson of Macon County has sworn in 100 deputies and 85 repeating Winchesters to keep the peace. Miners who wish to work may do so despite the army encamped outside Decatur.
In Pittsburg Aug 11 a crisis nears as miners press the fight against New York and Cleveland Gas Coal. The day shows mixed progress with reports of further breaks in strikers at Turtle Creek and Sandy Creek. District President Dolan accuses operators of bad faith and vows a broader campaign into Central Pennsylvania.
The Indianapolis based executive committee of the sound money movement met in Chicago to plan a national commission. Hugh H. Hanna of Indianapolis presides with seven members present. They discussed the Chicago plan and potential future actions, awaiting remaining members to join. The group aims to craft a new financial system for the government with exclusive authority on Congress presentation.
In Ansville Indiana on August 11 the marching miners ignored a court injunction and formed on the public highway to the Ingle mines. Workers arriving at 6 am joined the strikers, expanding the strike to all Ingle workers and threatening others in nearby mines. The strikers maintain order and are well fed.
Sally Smith the California bantam has signed to fight Peddler Palmer before the London National club on October 18 for a purse of 3000 dollars. Both fighters will weigh in at 122 pounds each.
After a six week shutdown the Delaware iron works at Newcastle have resumed operations employing between 400 and 500 workers.
Forty workers walk out demanding pay raises from 1.25 to 1.50 dollars and from 2.50 to 3 dollars per day for teams and man. The stoppage halts brick block construction in Red Lake Fall on August 11.
