First annual report of Texas Negro missionary work in 1844
The report lists over 1000 Negro members among Texans and highlights Uncle Mark a famed slave evangelist. He was a Washington County figure who preached to both Black and white congregations and helped convert many. Accounts differ on how he gained freedom, with claims of purchase by a Masonic lodge or self-funded release through white donations. Methodists and Baptists admitted slaves and encouraged separate Black church groups.
