A $250000 blaze in East Pottstown started by an exploding oil burner gutted half a block of stores. Firefighters from many communities battled the flames as smoke filled the air and six men were injured or overcome. Albert Kessler, owner of the first building, estimated the damage.
James F. Byrnes urged reducing federal spending and taxes in a speech to the southern governors conference in Biloxi Mississippi. He warned that debt and taxes worsen the problem and called for expenditure cuts though he said executive departments and Congress show little interest.
A North Texas cold front brings subfreezing readings across much of the state with Dallas and Panhandle areas dropping into the 20s and 30s. Lubbock Amarillo Dalhart report notably low temperatures while sun may lift readings later.

The move follows four weeks of detention charged as trumped up. Senator Tom Connally said the U S will take suitable action to protect its citizens and rights.

In Fort Worth a Texas couple discovers their marriage license from 1947 was invalid under a new law. The ceremony occurred two years after the license issue, conducted by a justice of the peace in Lubbock, leaving the newlyweds unaware they were not legally married.

Three witnesses identified Ollie Otto Prince of Corsicana as the Malone State Bank robber who stole 15764 on Oct 5 1948. The defense argued Prince was in or near Corsicana during the crime as his trial began in Waco with seven alibi witnesses. Prince already has a 10 year sentence for a Rice County bank robbery.
Three Dallas women charged S L Bellamy with unfitness for a 7000 dollar post as director of community service under the states anti juvenile delinquency program but the Youth Development Council stood by Bellamy. The council also ousted Gatesville school superintendent R E Blair and ordered study of relocating the Brady Negro girls training school with possible transfer near Tyler.
