Mickey Haefner pitched a complete game knuckleball for the Washington Nationals to topple the Cleveland Indians 1 to 0. The 36 year old southpaw allowed only one safe hit in the first inning and did not record a strikeout. The Nationals extended their winning streak to eight games.
St Louis Browns muster only three hits but Jerry Priddy delivers a ninth inning homer to beat the Boston Red Sox 2-1. Priddy also had a third inning double that scored Dick Kokos as the Browns snap a 10 game skid at Sportsman's Park. Red Embree notches the win and Haefner later blanks Cleveland for a Washington sweep.
Hotel detective Albert F. Schmidt testified that Pitcher Virgil Trucks struck him on the chin after following a tall brunette in green slacks to Trucks’s hotel room. Heidler seeks $32,500 in a suit alleging the Sept 20 1946 assault in the Hotel Staller corridor.
Former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey announced he will promote Willie Pep's next featherweight title defense possibly against Sandy Saddler. The bout is planned for late June or July in New York or New England with Max Waxman as matchmaker. Pep’s manager Lou Viscusi said Dempsey’s offer tops previous bids and hinted other contenders if Saddler is not signed.
The Lockhart Red Sox undefeated in four starts seek a June 19 Sunday game contact Joe Sanchez in Lockhart. They beat the San Antonio Aztecs 6 3 with Big Bert Guerrero allowing six hits. Other victims this year include Cuero Dan's Cafe and Gonzales.
The New York Yankees, with six timely hits and seven walks, defeated Hal Newhouser and the Detroit Tigers 6-1. Allie Reynolds allowed six hits and five walks, aided by four double plays to neutralize Tiger threats.
Detroit May 10 Yogi Berra catcher for the New York Yankees was knocked unconscious when struck in the head by a ball during infield practice. He was taken to a hospital with no fracture found and Dr Roy Mc Clure said he should be all right within a week. Berra was advised to rest for two days. He was hit above the right eye by a ball thrown by Jack Phillips. He was revived after being taken to the Yankees dressing room and then sent for X rays. The Yankees entrained Tuesday night for Cleveland.
Billy Joe Purser of Trent has been elected assistant coach of athletics at Llano High School for next year, succeeding Philip Barnhart. Purser was co-captain of Abilene Christian College football last year and will complete his BA this year.
The 72 hole South west Conference golf tournament begins Thursday at the University of Texas home links, Austin Municipal. About 25 to 30 players tee off in medal play for the conference singles title. Texas favorite Bob Watson teams with Morris Williams Jr. to defend the crown, with Baylor’s Roman Parma, A&M’s Bert Halton and Marion Pfluger as major threats. Other Texas entries include Reese Alexander, Bill Smith, and Gil Kuykendall.
Llano will form a six team summer softball league this year announced by Spencer Weber after a meeting of town and county players. Teams include the Men's Bible Class the Jaycees Oestreich and Castell combined the VFW the Liano High School and a Lions Club sponsored high school boys team. League organization and managers will be chosen this week.
