Editor Defends Adviser as Lattimore Faces Communist Claims
Former Red Utley testified that Owen Lattimore showed subservience to Communist Party discipline while American editor Demaree Bess defended him saying he saw no evidence of fellow traveler ties. Bess said Lattimore learned from Soviet officers in Moscow and shared information with U.S. intelligence. Utley, who joined the British Communist Party in 1928, argued Lattimore and his wife acted like Communists, while Lattimore denied being a Communist or sympathizer. He is set to testify again as Budenz accuses him of belonging to a Communist cell in Institute of Pacific Relations.
