Santa Fe Keeps Tab On Car Brood Across Rail Network

The Santa Fe Railway tracks a fleet of 40 000 freight car children daily using the Red Ball Information Service and 300 000 miles of private wires. Shippers or consignees can obtain continuous reports on car location at no extra cost as cars move from Joliet to Topeka and beyond. Reports flow 24 hours a day from shipping points to Topeka, with updates as cars progress toward assembly plants or destinations. About 20 percent of shippers use the service, and records are kept about 60 days before destruction.
