Strong Republican guerrillas entered central Soekaboemi in West Java on Sunday and burned 18 shops before retreating under Dutch Army fire. At least one Dutch soldier was killed and four wounded. Guerrilla losses unknown.

Pittsburgh March 14 A two week coal work stoppage ordered by John L Lewis idled at least 56 375 railroad workers and about 425 000 United Mine workers. The plan aims to protest the appointment of Dr James Boyd as head of the US Bureau of Mines and will cut coal output. Railroads across Pennsylvania Chesapeake and Ohio and others furloughed workers totaling thousands.
Chicago March 13 A railroad spokesman said a five day week contract with nonoperating unions could be written after a presidential fact finding board opinion. The decision binds 131 class one carriers and the nonoperating union committee though not all issues are settled. The board urged five day work weeks starting Dec. 17 for railroads long operating seven days.
Winston Churchill wrote to the Conservative candidate in the Sowerby by election criticizing the Labour government for nationalization and free enterprise dependence. He argued socialist policies ruined industries turning them into loss-making enterprises across Britain.

In Zanesville Ohio on Sunday Frank Dalton a white bearded 101 or 102 year old man claiming to be Jesse James spoke against treasure hunters seeking 1.5 million dollars buried near Zanesville Dalton hospitalized with pneumonia at Brackenridge Hospital dismissed the hunt as a waste of time saying the treasure is only about 52000 dollars. He accused Lee Hawk of Van Nuys California and Roscoe James of Colorado of perpetuating a legend. The treasure hunters who began the search Saturday reported a chest found at Black Log Cemetery, but their metal detector failed to operate.
