The Liberal Party led by Louis St Laurent won a nationwide election for 262 seats, defeating George Drew’s Progressive Conservatives and the Socialist CCF. Quebec and Ontario provided the bulk of seats while Newfoundland voted Liberal in its first national contest. St Laurent, 67, campaigned on prosperity and social security with a health plan proposed. Drew relied on Duplessis support in Quebec.

Two Illinois youths held at Lockhart for theft probe
