Corn fertilizer and nitrogen balance for high yields
Texas A M College extension chemist M K Thornton explains that applying 200 to 300 pounds per acre of 4-12-4 or 5-10-5 fertilizer adds enough phosphoric acid for about 60 bushels of corn but only 15 bushels from nitrogen. He recommends 200 pounds ammonium nitrate or pounds sulphate of ammonia as a side dressing to balance initial fertilization and improve yield, quality, and drought tolerance. He notes legume rotations boost nitrogen and soil tilth.
