Grand jury clears officials in Amerasia case

A federal grand jury in New York found no evidence of government wrongdoing in handling the Amerasia five year old documents case and urged a full public report on prosecutions and seized FBI papers. The probe also touched on calls for a Senate inquiry and a proposed seven member investigative panel.

Central Texas population nears four hundred thousand

Census reports from 12 of 16 counties show 280,522 residents in Central Texas with Austin at 131,964 and Travis County rising. Counties including Hays, Williamson, Bastrop, Lee, Blanco, Burnet and Caldwell show mixed gains and losses as urban areas grow while rural numbers fall. Overall trend points to about 400,000 with missing counties Milam and Fayette carrying 1940 figures.

AFL El Paso Unit Indicted in Anti-Trust Conspiracy

The West Texas New Mexico chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association and Local Union 460 of the AFL International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, both in Odessa Midland area, were indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiring to restrain trade in electrical equipment sales. Finland Keeps World War I Debt Record With Payment

Finland paid 159,619.74 to the United States on Thursday, maintaining its history of no defaults on World War I debt. Of the sum, 124,792.50 was interest, leaving a remaining obligation of 7,757,129.46 as reported by the Treasury.

Texas Oilmen Gain Increased Crude Allowable Output

The Railroad Commission on Thursday granted Texas oil producers an extra 66,706 barrels daily for July. Statewide allowable production set at 2,445.93 barrels per day with 21 calendar days allowed in July for all fields except East Texas. The June 10 average daily output was 2,379,229 barrels.

Murder charge filed in gun death of T R Guthrie

Sheriff reports murder charges connected to the shooting death of 36 year old T R Guthrie found with six bullet wounds in his bed on Manchaca Road. Investigators name a suspect and alert police statewide while autopsy and funeral plans proceed. Guthrie had lived in several cities, including Houston and Dallas, and left a mother and four sisters.

Supreme Court Sets McDonald Ballot Hearing Tuesday

Supreme Court granted J E McDonald permission to file a mandamus suit to force the Democratic State Executive Committee to place him on the ballot for a 11th term as commissioner of agriculture. Hearing is set for Tuesday at 10 am. Calhoun chairs a lawyers’ meeting to defend the committee with George Sergeant as chief counsel and many volunteers named. Former Gov Dan Moody and ex Sen Clint Small will lead McDonald’s counsel in the effort.
