The 22 year old Community Chest of Austin plans a comeback to win public support and funds for 18 agencies. A June 15 open meeting will consider expanding its 18 member board to 93, creating a monthly executive panel, and hiring a public relations specialist.
Heavy rains and hail shattered cotton fields across the South Plains with estimates of 200000 acres ruined. A twister damaged Lone Star outbuildings near Silverton while floods crippled Highway 80 traffic near Big Spring. One man nearly drowned as floodwaters swept through the area and San Antonio reported a severe lightning strike causing property damage.
Texas veterans pressed a $400 million World War II bonus but the House failed to quorum and the measure stalled. Senate moved to empower cities to re establish rent controls amid a housing crunch despite opposition that it would violate constitutional authority. Conference committees kept working on big money state budget bills as lawmakers pressed toward adjournment.
Russell Jack Ballard of Wichita Falls, head of the Good Citizens League of Texas, petitioned a court of inquiry in Austin to probe lobbying activities before the Legislature. He alleges lobbyists avoid registration and that no lobbyist list has been furnished to the attorney general, offering to testify that Capitol halls reek of open violations. He asks a justice court to call for affidavits filed by witnesses who testified before legislative committees.

A top atomic official testified that a Hanford Washington plant handles a product far more lethal than deadly poison but denied any link to a new atomic weapon. He noted the plant's role in plutonium production alongside uranium 235 and described phases in atomic bomb materials.
Associated Press reports three crashes over 24 hours killed or left missing 102 people. A C46 charter went down off San Juan with 75 passengers and six crew. 27 Brazilians perished in a Brazilian Army transport crash en route to Argentina. a Greek TAE transport crashed in a thunderstorm near Athens killing 22 including a Greek general amid sabotage suspicions.
In Paris secret talks, Dean Acheson and Western powers rejected Soviet veto heavy schemes for Berlin. The US favored a Vienna style majority rule for city acts, while the Soviet plan would keep Moscow veto power over German local government.
In Washington on June 7 the Murray Lewis feud over Taft-Hartley repeal heated up as CIO chief Philip Murray accused John L. Lewis of libel and denied secret deals. Senate panels kept the repeal bill alive while Republicans stalled labor proposals, and AFL officials denied secret amendments. Murray rebutted Lewis saying no secret deals exist.
Washington reports a new tidelands bill renouncing federal rights in inland waters while preserving federal dominion over submerged coastal areas. The measure, backed by Johnson Krug and Clark, clarifies navigable inland waters and excludes water power and mineral exploration rights. Speaker Rayburn says it differs from the prior conference proposal.
FBI reports disclosed to the Coplon espionage case show Russia received atomic research devices from the United States in 1947 with two more shipments blocked in 1948 and 1949. Amtorg appeared to know what equipment to request and coordinated with Geophysical Research Corporation to buy Geophones, while export licenses were not issued.
Whitaker Chambers testified at the Alger Hiss perjury trial that he lied seven times before the grand jury to shield fellow Communists. He said his aims were to partly expose the Communist conspiracy and to spare individuals from greater injury while the defense pressed him on honesty.
Johnny Henderson a 40 year old Black man in Sweetwater died Tuesday from accidental electrocution while wiring under his house. The death occurred in Sweetwater and authorities reported the incident.
In Galveston on June 7 a sun-tanned Mrs. Martha Pfeiffer said she wished to return to her husband if he would have her. The Crystal Lake, Illinois woman is under nurse care after watching her married companion shoot himself to death in their swank apartment. Her husband told her not to return and that she could not see their daughter Marilyn again. Robert Emmett Benjamin, 33, of Crystal Lake and Chicago, killed himself after a church visit. Mrs. Pfeiffer planned to visit her mother in Paducah, Kentucky to rest.
Florida Governor Fuller Warren plans to marry Miss Barbara Manning, a Los Angeles socialite, in a June 26 ceremony. The 43 year old governor has married twice before, while Manning is 24 and this is her first marriage. The couple’s romance began in September during Warren’s Citrus inspection tour in California.
Rollins College on Tuesday announced Paul A. Wagner, 31, as its new president, making him the youngest head of any accredited liberal arts college in the country. He succeeds 76 year old Hamilton Holt who has retired, joining Rollins after serving at Bell and Howell where he supported president Charles Percy.
Dallas judge allows $200000 damage suit against AFL Local 745 for pressuring Fast Motor Freight out of business. Receiver Robert P. Bush alleges union’s picketing and threats after a 44th District Court injunction by Judge W L Thornton, with Houston local and Southern Express named as defendants. Trial set for next fall.
Western Allied officials ordered the airlift to start carrying eight tons of Berlin mail daily to West Berlin citing Soviet manipulation. The move follows a rail strike that rerouted mail through the Soviet sector where it was censored and theft occurred. Soviet guards blocked trucks from delivering mail into West Berlin as workers press for union recognition and pay in Westmarks.
Odessa reports the drowning of 9 year old Myron Ray Moore in the county swimming pool on Tuesday. He is the son of Mr and Mrs M P Moore.
An 11 year old Bastrop County boy Bobby Hoffman was admitted to Brackenridge Hospital with polio on Tuesday night. Health officials prepared DDT fogging in Austin as San Angelo and San Antonio report rising cases and deaths. In Dallas County two young girls from Mesquite were admitted, totaling eight polio cases in the county. Austin reports ten polio cases with five deaths this year, while six patients remain in the Bastrop ward in good condition.
