Southern leaders react to Sweatt ruling in school desegregation
Georgia Governor Herman Talmadge condemned the Supreme Court decisions as a challenge to Southern traditions while leaders across the region hailed the rulings as progress toward equal facilities. The verdicts require admitting Negro students to all white or segregated programs where facilities are unequal and ban racial segregation on railroad dining cars. Major states face suits and funding calls as officials weigh compliance and future integration steps.

Court Minority Mystified By Tideland Rule
Justices Reed and Minton dissent as they say the federal government lacks authority to claim tidelands from states. They argue defense and foreign affairs do not justify transferring ocean bed ownership from Texas to the United States. The court’s ruling on offshore lands prompts sharp debate on government property rights.
