May rainfall overall normal with sectional runoff variation

Texas rainfall in May was nearly normal overall per the State Board of Water Engineers, but sections varied widely. Northeast Texas saw more than double usual rainfall while West Texas received under half, affecting river runoff patterns and flood stages across the state.

Boy Turned Over To Authorities In Shooting By River

An 11 year old Austin youth was turned over to probation authorities Tuesday in connection with the near fatal shooting of 8 year old Billy Joe Simpson on the Colorado River May 21. Ballistics tests by the Department of Public Safety showed the bullet came from the youth's gun. Detectives Herbert and Rampy took the boy into custody and turned him over to probation authorities. Simpson was in fair condition at Brackenridge Hospital Tuesday afternoon.

The Admiralty confirmed a possible sabotage attempt on the 23 000 ton carrier Illustrious on May 1 three signal flares were found in a boiler room while carrying Viscount Hall and other officials to Liverpool for the Ark Royal launch No explosion or damage occurred and investigations continue

1st Violator Of Wrecker Act On Probation

An Austin wrecker driver was placed on 90 days probation in Corporation Court for violating the citys wrecker ordinance. Sidney H Schoonover 101 Nel Ray Boulevard faced a May 31 charge of driving without a permit and going to a wreck scene. The ordinance aims to curb multiple wreckers rushing to incidents and operates from a police rotation list. Captain W W Blackman said the ordinance is working well with other violators warned and future charges expected.
