American troops entered combat against North Korean forces for the first time since World War II, advancing toward Suwon 23 miles south of Seoul. Reports said a northern tank column fought near Chechon and Wonju while US and Australian air strikes slowed the assault as front lines remained fluid north of Suwon.
London today reports Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko demanded immediate withdrawal of American armed forces from Korea. He accused the United States of direct aggression against Korea and China, and of interfering in Asia by arms aid to the Philippines and to Indochina.

The Treasury announced that the federal deficit for fiscal 1950 totaled 3.122 billion dollars, about 43 percent less than President Truman's January estimate. The government took in 37.045 billion and spent 40.167 billion to finance regular programs and the cold war through June 30.
