Truman power shown in House test and party shift
The article outlines a House showdown where Sabath led a plan to curb the rules committee, backed by Truman forces with 49 Republicans. It notes potential repeal steps for Taft Hartley and hints at a GOP split from tradition. In the Senate, Taft's leadership remains, while Rayburn is elected Speaker in a party-line vote.

Quiet congressional opening contrasts with prior rowdy session
The 1933 Congress opened calmly with Democrats in control while recalling the 1931 tumult over Bilbo and Southern filibuster threats. Senators Bilbo and Overton are noted as deceased since, and Senator Barkley becomes presiding vice president while Vandenberg praises him.

Toward Better Telephone Service in the Postwar Era
The 1949 outlook stresses expanding service to 185000 unconnected customers despite 1948 high costs. Long Distance added 200000 miles of circuits and 1000 new voice channels, but 151 million dollars more is needed this year for postwar plant. Earnings must look reasonable to attract new investment.
