A sweeping Lousiana and Arkansas tornado outbreak left 59 dead and 250 to 300 injured, with Warren, Arkansas bearing the heaviest toll at 54 known dead. Rescue and relief work moved quickly as Mayor Jim Hurley warned recovery would take years.
Harold Gully reports from a small plane over Warren Arkansas on January 4 as the tornado’s 100 mile path roared through northwest Louisiana and southeast Arkansas. He describes trees uprooted and gouges in the forest while tracing the storm toward Warren, passing Bradley Lumber Company’s stack.

The Southwestern Bell Telephone Co seeks rate increases from 2.35 to 4 dollars per month for residences and from 6 to 9.50 dollars for business service. A joint meeting with the City Council and citizens advisory committee will be at City Hall Thursday 8 p.m. Mayor Miller announced. A public hearing will follow later. The citizens committee is led by Fagan Dickson, former Austin attorney general.
