Austin High to Lead Citizenship Education Project
Austin High School will lead a two Texas school pilot in a nationwide citizenship education project for 1950-51. Columbia University received a 450000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation to fund the effort. Principal T P Baker and social studies teacher Robert Teel returned from a two week New York conference. Sunset High of Dallas is the other Texas participant. The project aims to test teaching materials and methods to strengthen citizenship training without advancing any political ideology. Eisenhower says more grants may follow beyond August 1951, and the program emphasizes basic American values and responsible citizenship rather than doctrine.

UTs Navy of zoologists sails into Coast Garden
A 30 year old UT zoology “navy” used the 200 ton three masted ship Navidad donated by Regent George W Brackenridge for Gulf coast research. The crew of students and professors soon blocked the Houston ship channel, attracting harbor inspector scrutiny. A hurricane grounded the ship in a garden and $35 freed Navidad for return.
