White, a 25 year old from Wichita Falls, led incumbent J E McDonald by 6757 votes in the Sunday tally for Texas agriculture commissioner. County Duval later figures to add about 4100 votes, with final results pending from San Diego county.
John C. White of Wichita Falls defeated 69 year old J E McDonald in a surprising political upset for the Texas agriculture commissioner post. White, 25, ran on conviction and rural ties after a low profile campaign that drew broad support from Democratic bosses and agriculture teachers amid a hotly debated race. The July primary runoff followed McDonald leading with 417,736 votes to White's 206,411 before final tallies including other candidates.
Austin and Central Texas will get relief from the heat with partly cloudy skies and a high of 90. Increasing cloudiness is expected to bring cooler temperatures, though scattered thundershowers are likely to begin after noon Monday.
