Florence Honors Hospital and Doctor in Central Texas

Florence dedicates a new 13 500 hospital and clinic with local shares bought by 550 citizens in February. Dr George E Strickland arrives from Graham to run the hospital 99 5 percent owned by locals. Local Oculist Seeks Dismissal in Anti Trust Case

Austin eye doctor P F Suehs asks Chicago US District Court to dismiss the four year old anti trust suit as lacking jurisdiction. He argues the oculists were sued as a class not named individually and failed to appear. The brief moves to vacate Judge Labay’s 1948 order directing show cause why 22 doctors should be adequately representative.

Pageant Draws 2000 Spectators at City Playground Gala

More than 2000 people crowded West Austin Playground Friday night to watch children from 17 city playgrounds close the summer season with a gala two ring circus and pageant. About 100 children played wild animal parts while Mayor Taylor Glags presented citizenship awards to four outstanding youngsters from each playground. Beverly Sheffield led introductions and thanked 50 recreation department staff. City officials praised the program as among the country’s best. Jack Swenson acted as ringmaster for acrobat and clown acts with music from the Boys and Girls Municipal Band directed by Weldon Covington.

Assault Charged In Gangland War In East Austin

A 17 year old Austin youth faced aggravated assault charges after a group attack on two girls aged 13 and 14 in East Austin. Bond was set at 500 dollars for Ollie Keeto Wilson of 2208 Haskell Street. Police detained the trio of Austinites and turned one juvenile over to probation authorities.

Taegu Front Holds Despite Red Offensive

Saturday reports say three Red divisions were halved in power as the Taegu line held. South Koreans pressed near Taegu, air forces hit Pyongyang tanks, and naval strikes disrupted Reds seaborne supply routes from Masan to Pusan. Air raids set new flight records with 600 sorties targeting Hungnam Wonsan and Seoul.

Army and State Urge Fast Four Lane Belton Temple Link

Both the U S Army and the Texas Highway Commission press for rapid completion of a four lane Belton to Temple spur on the Fort Worth San Antonio arterial. The commission orders Bell County to speed obstructions removal and right of way purchases and directs plans and early construction of three major bridges costing 400000 dollars. Texas heatwave continues with scattered showers possible

Weather summary reports continued high temperatures across Texas with only minor relief. Partly to mostly sunny conditions persist, especially in the Panhandle, as a few off and on showers appear in extreme south regions. Morning to evening readings show highs near 95 to 100 degrees and lows around 70s, with no significant cooldown expected.

Doran Elected Settlers Head at San Saba Reunion

Detectives Probe Three Minor Robberies Around City

City detectives Friday investigated three theft reports. W C Trousdale at 618 East Sixth Street reported a hydraulic jack taken from his car. Augustina Cantu of 501 East 14th Street said an oil stove was stolen from a back porch. Roy Peach at 204 Archway reported a portable typewriter stolen from his room last Saturday.

Half of Austin firefighters back plan to sue for raise

One shift of the Austin Firefighters Association votes 31 to 9 to file a mandamus suit for a 20 percent pay hike. The second shift meets Saturday to decide. City Council endorsed a four point wage program. association says it does not reject the plan and will pursue the suit. The administration’s program, effective Jan 1, adds a total 10 percent raise for city workers plus retirement improvements with retroactive longevity benefits tied to the 1950 census.
