The Agriculture Department's first 1950 forecast puts Texas cotton at 3,001,001 bales of 500 pounds gross weight, about 76 percent of normal. National output falls 10,308,000 bales from last year, with a yield of lint at 26.49 pounds per acre and a 31 percent smaller cultivated area in Texas.
Thorndale for 1950: Laurence Leschber of the Kennedy Ranch delivered the first bale weighing 1,600 pounds, ginned by Thorndale Co operative Gin. Eight acres were picked to produce the bale, which post-ginning weighed 559 pounds. Last year’s first bale arrived Aug 10, 505 pounds, from Theo Market after eight acres of picking.
Oren Eskew, Bastrop businessman and WWII Rainbow Division veteran who spent six months as a German POW, is installed as post commander of James H. Perkins Post 533 American Legion. Eskew, a former machine gunner, recalls harsh camp conditions and a return to Bastrop to lead civic work, with officers Audelle Sanders, Clifford H. Clark, Dan Smith, and Lee Alexander named alongside him.
Llano County summons announced by the Fredericksburg board serving five counties. Thomas Albert Forehand Woody Andrew McGehee and Maurice Hamilton Jr. are directed to report for preinduction physicals at Fort Sam Houston on Wednesday following the Korea War start.
John A. Kerr Jr. was sentenced to die in the gas chamber for the July 2 murder of Troy R. Buckles, a 54 year old Fresno grocer, in an acknowledged meat cleaver slaying.
The Travis County 4 H Dairy Club meets at Joe Carrington Farm on San Antonio Road Thursday at 9 am. The county agent office says calf production and care will be studied. Open to 4 H boys and girls, parents, dairymen, and prospective members aged 9 to 20. Sponsors have raised funds for dairy premiums at the Travis County Junior Livestock Show next March and assist members in finding good heifers.
