Mrs. Oxcar Nixon dies at home in Alta following a long illness. Wis J B Teerink passes away in Alta after a long illness. Gladys Kruse completes beauty culture course in Sioux City and will take state exam soon. George Glawe family travels to Omaha. Muriel to Burbank for marriage to Donald Anderson. Elmer Anderson elected Commander of Smith Post 498 for the year. Kr Anderson to succeed Breyfogle. Funeral services held for Mrs. Martin Hanson at home and Elk Baptist Church. Wedding stationery advertised by Sentinel.
Work on Cherokee County's first rural electrification project moved forward at a rapid pace Thursday with Hawke Construction of Des Moines adding nearly 40 workers. Project superintendent T. Glenn Dull reported, while Captain William McCulloch, a West Point graduate and local faculty member, received a promotion. Construction of COC camp will start Saturday June 24 with 50 men housed near Sioux Valley hospital until buildings are erected. Cherokee County sent the largest Junior Farm Bureau delegation to the district rural youth camp at Camp Foster, Lake Okoboji, while per pupil public school spending for the year ending June 30 1985 was $80.04, 2 cents under the prior year and below state average.
A dispatch says the state highway commission will receive bids on county road projects June 89. Projects include 26.4 miles of bridging and culverts paving and four railroad crossing improvements. Cherokee county plans four miles of paving 17 culverts and four miles of grading on Kierwer 59 from Cherokee south.
Mrs. Frank Negless hosts Birthday club with prizes to Miss Elsie Freese Mrs Helen Boock and Mrs Lille Goettach. Residents visit friends across Cherokee and Aurelia while students travel to schools and chorus events. Funeral services for Mrs August Miller noted in Galva.
Dorothy Goeders of Palo County will head the Towa 4 H club girls for the coming year. She was installed at the twelfth annual 4 H girls convention at Iowa State College. Officers include Francise Holschine vice president Margaret Vigars secretary treasurer Jane Blyth historian. Awards went to Helen Creger for best clothing record and Vivian Obrecht for nutrition. Delegates and readers totaled about 1700. An outdoor music festival highlighted the event with about 1500 girls participating.
Aurelia and area fans anticipate a Sunday matchup as the LeMars Orioles visit Aurelia for their first meeting of the season. LeMars won opener against Rock Waley and then lost to Remsen. Aurelia heads to Algona for a return game with the Brownies, and fans willing to chauffeur players should inform Irwin C. Kroll.
Candidate Elwod Toich of finghem has accepted the call to Alta Lutheran Church and plans are for his ordination and installation on Sunday July 16. The church, established about two years ago as a BE B mission church of the Missouri Synod, has been served by the pastor and assistant from St. John's Lutheran at Hanover.
A severe windstorm struck Alta Sunday morning causing widespread tree damage. Numerous trees were uprooted and branches snapped, with the Gust Lund home bearing the heaviest loss as two large trees fell onto a carport. Everett Lund and his visiting family from Alfred New York witnessed the damage.
The state highway commission on Tuesday announced low bids for No 59 paving and drainage from Cherokee four miles south. Union Construction Co and Donhowe & Anderson of Des Moines submitted the low bid for four miles of paving at SKK608. Moville Construction Co of Moville placed the low bid for 17 culverts at 5220. Ostermann & Sons of Ocheyedan submitted the lowest grazing bid at 26276.
The Afton League of the 4-Seat Clover met at Kathleen Grasshoff home on Tuesday June 20 with eight members and two visitors. New member Gladys Whiting joined. Mrs. Loucks spoke on canning, Alice Lydell reported on Ames trip, Grasshoff and Lydell named to the Demonstration team, prizes awarded to Marian Anderson Alice and Louis Lydell. Lois Lydell reported the news.
Mrs. Mildred Thomson reports on June society meetings in Aurelia and nearby areas. Events include the Chiefs club at Mrs. Alfred Stieneke’s, Pethian Sisters memorials, Rebekahs birthday party, Embroidery and Lutheran Aid gatherings, surprise party for Mrs. C. R. Waddell, and a rural carriers meeting at M. Hines home. The Aurelia Alumni banquet featured toasts and elected officers. attendance influenced December rescheduling. Guests traveled from Elk Point South Dakota and Ohio for various gatherings.
