Diseases Attack Many Iowa Trees Broadcast Health Advisory
Iowa trees face multiple diseases this year and treatment varies by disease. Plant pathologist Paul H. Schuldt of Iowa State College advises identifying phloem necrosis in elm by base-of-tree damage and wintergreen odor, with DDT-based spraying in two periods. He notes spraying this year won’t show effects until 1951 and recommends 4 heaping tablespoons of 40 percent DDT wettable powder in 3 gallons of water or 1 pound in 40 gallons, applied mid June to late July, with repeat applications next year if symptoms persist.
