Lamb Prices Improve for Iowa Farmers This Year

Economists at Iowa State College report that this year’s lamb prices average higher than last year. Nationally farmers may slaughter fewer lambs per 100 ewes, offset by more ewes on farms this spring. Pasture shortages delayed early marketing, with 10 percent fewer sheep and lambs slaughtered in May, while many lambs moved to feedlots and will return as fed lambs. Prices typically dip from mid June to mid August as spring lambs hit markets.
