Best Time to Plow Biannual Sweet Clover for Soil Benefit

Dr W H Pierre Iowa State College agronomy head says the second year sweet clover should be plowed mid to late August for maximum soil nitrogen benefit. Plowing too early loses nitrogen and slows decomposition. delaying after the top dies makes plowing difficult but waiting until growth wanes yields best soil improvement. Some farmers with moisture consider plowing nonseeded crops grown for soil health.
