Published every Thursday and entered as second class matter at the post office at Aurelia Iowa. Subscription rates per year in advance two dollars, foreign countries two dollars and fifty cents. Notice this paper does not stop at expiration date unless we are so notified, and subscribers who continue to accept paper will be under obligation to pay for same.
The Aurelia Sentinel urges readers in arrears to pay promptly to cover operating costs. Subscriptions statements will be mailed after year’s start, requiring clerical work and postage. Subscribers are asked to remit by mail or visit the office, with thanks from the publishers.
The Mt Olive column lists residents visiting relatives and attending events across Iowa and Minnesota, detailing travels to Cherokee Aurelia Sloan Larrabee Lake City and Estherville. Names include Beverly Ohlson Sherwood Ohlson Loyd Ohlson and many local families with New Year and Christmas gatherings noted.
The Aurelia Independent basketball team travels for two away games next week against Larrabee on Monday and Cleghorn on Wednesday. A home game versus Alta is scheduled later with date to be announced.
The Aurelia fire department was called to the Garland Hickey farm this morning to extinguish a chimney fire in the tenant house occupied by the Ben Grose family. Mr and Mrs Herman Frederick and daughter Ardith returned to Aurora South Dakota after visiting relatives in the community. Harold Hogrefe and family of Peterson joined Charles Zwemke and Herman Frederich households for weekend companionship. Joan Huseman of Schaller spent holidays with Harry Lietz and Arthur Wogahn families. Arthur Wogahn and Larry and Fred Wogahn hosted visitors from Aurelia at their home. Several relatives gathered at the Frederich and Lietz homes for Sunday meals and visits.
Jesse Pennington of Diamond township retires after 87 years in public service. A Silver born official, he served as assessor, clerk, then supervisor for five terms, moving to Diamond in 1937. He and his wife will join son Kenneth at Robbins Hatchery and Produce in Linn Grove after leaving office. He did not seek re election.
The Alta Advertiser reports a 10 percent rate increase for power and light services effective with January bills due February 1. The rise comes as fuel oil costs surged in 1947 from 6.765 cents to 12.44 cents per gallon, with labor and other costs also rising.
Thirty Farm Bureau women from Afton and Pitcher townships gathered at the M. and church in Aurelia for a joint meeting. Mrs. Carmen Lawrence led the program covering buying and using pressure sauce pans with safety tips. A complete meal featuring 2 minute custard sweet potatoes rolled steak and broccoli was prepared by Mrs. Lawrence and lunch was served by the committee.
The Legion will host a stag party after its regular meeting Thursday night January 16. Merlin Shank announces a program of three films including a 20 minute comedy cartoon and 83 minutes of Phillips 66 Oilers basketball.
The schedule lists games from January to February at various venues. Notable dates include Marcus on January 9 and February 6, Sutherland January 16, Cherokee South Carolina January 20, and the county tournament January 28–31 at Cherokee with sectional playoffs February 23–28.

Albert Cross of Mitchellville visited the Elmo Bell family near Winterset. They were not home at the time. Later they found he had died by hanging in a suicide.
