400 Corn Loans In First Rush by Farmers

Cherokee Times reports more than 400 corn loans closed by Wednesday as counties rush to seal corn under the soil conservation program. Alfred Schmillen, vice chairman of the Cherokee county AAA committee, says supplies arrived from Des Moines and a goal of about one to two million bushels in the coming weeks. A corn testing machine speeds moisture checks. corn is tested only after 24 hours in the county office to ensure proper temperature. If prices stay below 60 cents, sealing will continue, as producers shield themselves from future feed costs and market swings by sealing now at low cost rather than risking higher prices or drought later.
