Ten years ago Aurelian district news reports a modern new school house for District No 8 Elk township funded by a winter sociable. Also notes a serious appendicitis operation for Troy Mimmert, new Rapp Brothers restaurant opening, visitors A J Whinery and daughter Mary from Canon City, Colorado, oats harvest near finish with a smaller crop than last year, and locals Cora’s fine appearance despite crop worries in Cherokee county.
Four hundred boys on the troop train from Cherokee and Storm Lake to Camp Gordon July 25 enjoyed songs and cheers at each stop. The Y M C A party praised the boys conduct and noted Camp Gordon’s pleasant setting and orderly camp facilities.
Edgar E Mack of Storm Lake Iowa died in an auto mobile accident in Pennsylvania while returning from Magnolia Maryland where he visited Maj Frank W Mack and family. Five other occupants survived. he was about seventy and long active in Iowa politics. He leaves three sons Guy Frank Burt and three daughters Nellie Wagenon Grace Beatrice.
One of the county’s 240 men to join the army is Seth A. Nelson of Rembrandt. A former Swedish soldier, he left his home after persuading a voyage in a row boat to reach an Ananish steamer bound for Copenhagen and then America. He has lived in Rembrandt two years and chose service to help make the world the same kind of place the United States represents.
The Our Boys in France Tobacco Fund reports $22 donated this past week. Among contributors is T. R. Crippen. The note adds a reflective quote from C. Trench on wisdom over wit, warning that jest can backfire and lead to sadness.
