A reader recalls historic cold snaps in 1869 when migrating ducks and geese froze midair. Farmers stacked ladders to rescue ice birds as towns endured severe winter conditions and a quick thaw in April.
The Cherokee Chief L. M. S. says it took three days to thaw and the first action was to turn northward. He offers to show feathers picked from the ducks to prove the claim.
District Court appoints Lena Leopold and W H Bischel as executors of Gustav Leopold deceased. Creditors must file sworn claims with the clerk within legal time. heirs to pay promptly to avoid costs. Also advertisement for aluminum kettles with Saturday specials by J S Mummert.
The A division uses phrase cards for afternoon work. Elmer Magnuson missed school after a weekend accident. Third grade discusses health readers and perfect spelling. attendance notes sickness. Fourth grade Ralph Thevinin transfers from Alta. students study quotations about months. Fifth grade shows strong attendance. Merrill Thevenin joins. Junior high covers Wordsworth poetry and authors. sixth and seventh grades advance in arithmetic and reading. Local social events and measles noted. farm bureau set for Center schoolhouse meeting with moving pictures.
Fifty farm women attended the Afton township Farm Bureau meeting with a cheese demonstration by Mrs Will Montgomery, nutrition study, and piano selections by Mrs Lee Robinson. Similar gatherings occurred at Rock center school and Cherokee with nutrition training continuing. Cedar township at Larrabee hosted a busy program with a drill, playlet, and music. Baskets drew bids as proceeds of 124.20 were split between the bureau and school athletic fund. Egg donations requested by G J Lewis.
Perry Bengtson and his brother Robert bought a carload of cattle at Sioux City Tuesday and drove them from Aurelia on Wednesday. A finger injury at the sage grinder afflicted Little Helen Hanson and was treated by Mrs. Frank Radle. E. L. Deibner returned from Spirit Lake after visiting his mother. Mrs. Shell broke a rib in a fall last week but is recovering. A basket social at Silver No. 1 drew a good crowd with a Bengtson pupils program, songs, plays and a kiss to the audience. The play Boy Friends pleased the crowd and Studying for a Test reflected common school life. Marie Recites offered interest before the mother’s lesson about folly. Murdering the Language concluded the event.
The report notes a small bake sale at the school with limited baskets but about $38 raised in total. Milo Swanson drew the raffle winning the tray. Regular community happenings include residents returning from visits, new work starts, and Easter church programs with enthusiastic attendance.
Miss Lydia Meinking returned home from Morningside Sioux City after two months with her sister Mrs Lewis Richards. She came with Mrs Ricard and her young son to visit relatives. Mr and Mrs Oscar Lewis hosted friends at 500 last Friday night with a luncheon. George Ruge family visited the Mading home near Peterson. John Dyslin shelled corn Monday. Ruth Sanborn spent Friday night with her sister Mrs Oscar Lewis. Mr and Mrs George Roberts hosted his mother last week. Mrs Emma Loucks visited Glenn Loucks and Nina Loucks. Stoner of Larrabee boarding with Mrs Loucks while Spring No 8 spent Sunday with her sister Mrs Frank.
Seven Diamond township ladies met at Diamond Center for nutrition school plans on March 14 and April 11. Attendance was weak with five of the seven at the first school, prompting hopes for better future participation. Community leaders outlined district divisions and follow up sessions led by Mrs. Jones, plus local visits and church talks by Rev. Mark Masters.
