Temperance visit exposes tavern keeper’s theft from wife

A Hampden Washingtonian tale recounts a tavern keeper accused of denying bread to his wife and children. A neighbor led him to a sick home, where the abject poverty and a confession reveal the man’s role in taking flour and tea to fund liquor, ending his scrutiny of others’ bread theft. The scene closes as the husband of the ill woman appears drunk, sealing the temperance man’s lesson. The piece also notes paper seizures for short shipments, a slaveholding Illinois ruling, rising German immigration, and a remark by Com Stewart on naval rank.
