Bank consolidation and Southern trade prospects
The Charleston Bank consolidation reports that the South Carolina branch debts have been bought by the Bank of Charleston and will be wound up without pressuring the money market. The new Bank will start October with strong capacity and enable foreign and domestic exchanges for merchants. Mississippi’s growing cotton exports and rail improvements are cited, alongside ambitions for direct trade with Hamburg Havre and Liverpool to boost Southern prosperity and stabilize institutions.
