An old paper notice states publication occurs every Saturday morning at office number 261 Broad Street opposite the Masonic Mall. It identifies the publishing location and timing for readers and advertisers.
A broad notice list covers subscription rates for semi weekly and weekly papers with annual options, ad prices per square, and rules on run lengths. It includes probate and estate sale notices required by law, publication timings, and a heated Southern literary and religious-polemical review with references to abolitionists, nullifiers, and a Georgia reply. The piece ends with a polemic by A Georgian about a Reverend’s slaveholding and conduct.
Health of Augusta reports eighteen interments for month ending 1st inst: 11 whites and 7 blacks. Fatal accident says Janus McAllister died eight hours after skull fracture from horse run away. Apprentice's Companion issue announced. Dinner to Mr Chandler attended by Lexington bar. New Commercial Bulletin from Columbia and Mobile Daily Commercial Transcript noted. Lectures on Phrenology by Dr Robertson to start 16th instant. Judge Dougherty Nullification stance discussed by National Intelligencer and Raleigh Register.
A large State Rights gathering in Effingham County on the 21st adopted unanimously several resolutions affirming unwavering confidence in State Rights doctrines as taught by the Georgia State Rights party in Milledgeville. The resolutions pledge to resist Northern efforts to abolish slavery and to punish what they call unholy attempts to undermine the Southern States.
The Effingham County gathering endorses state protection against abolitionist designs and censures those accusing local supporters. A public dinner followed with speeches by Col. Jostrow W. Jackson, Col. Ley, S. D'Srox, and E. J. Black. A Savannah connection and Union Railroad engraving were noted, praising Georgian talent. Paris and Havre dates from Sept 23–24 arrived by packet.
From the Kuboxville Register we note Tennessee legislature passed resolutions recommending Judge Whites for the Presidency by sixty to twelve. Other items include a rail accident near Branchville injuring no passengers, a giant hog from Ohio to be turned into a skeleton, a duel between Navy officers at Smithfield with injuries, and civic notes on General Hamilton’s domestic duties.
Bills on the North and Savannah terms. Cotton trading across Charleston, Augusta, and New Orleans shows varied prices and stock, with weekly sales around 1040 to 10,000 bales reported. Prices quoted up to 17 cents for Upland and Sea Island, with Liverpool market influence and river conditions affecting receipts and demand.
