Destruction of the Buenos Ayres Schooner Atrevido
A Norfolk Herald report recalls the explosion of the Buenos Ayres armed schooner Atrevido near port, killing 48 aboard including most officers. The brig Independencia and the two vessels had been in port two months, and the blast destroyed the vessel abaft the main mast while a few survivors were rescued from the sea. The gunner allegedly opened the magazine against orders, with pistols causing the fatal accident, making the pilot elder Thomas of Hampton and four youths among the dead. Commodore Chaytor donated the remains to the pilot’s widow, and salvage efforts continued.
