An excerpt from Tales of My Landlord dramatizes Balfour of Burley fleeing pursued by troopers after shooting Henry Morton. The chase leads to Bothwell bridge then river escape as Burley shoots, wounds, and overwhelm a trooper before plunging into the water with mounted pursuit terminating at the riverbank confrontation.
A Buenos Aires warship disaster describes the destruction of the armed schooner Ep Atrevido after a magazine detonation on Monday. Forty eight people perished including officers, with 33 rescued from the brig Independencia nearby. The blast likely resulted from a pistols misfire and accidental magazine discharge. The elder Hampton pilot and four locals were among the dead. Commodore Chaytor aided salvage for the pilot’s widow. Vessels and remains were dealt with locally.
Fragmentary account describes two men swept into a river by a strong current. The pair struggled to surface as a Dutchman swam and Burley clung to a rocky edge. Their bodies were recovered a quarter mile downstream. a crude memorial stone and epitaph are noted nearby.
