Georgia Tax Collectors Arrears List 1808 Official Notice

Richmond Jail threatens removal of captured enslaved people

In November records describe Peter a forty year old enslaved man in Richmond Jail claiming kinship to Mrs Stith of Savannah and his supposed March arrival. Officials warn owners to follow the law and remove him. A negro girl Hannah tied to Floyd Jarvis of Columbia County is claimed by Toliver Bostick near Cambridge South Carolina, with owners told to comply and take her away.

Richmond Jail inmate described in sheriff report

Charles about twenty two years old five feet eight inches high with a scar under his right eye is in Richmond Jail. He wears a homespun shirt and overalls and a striped cotton watt coat. He says he belongs to Mr Sam’s Shy of Hancock County near Sparta. Sheriff Rhodes requests to comply with the law and take him away.
