The Charleston Courier brings late New York and Europe intelligence. The Southern Agriculturist July issue promotes Southern cultivation and endorses Martin Van Buren for President Richard M Johnson for Vice President William Schley for Governor and Jabez Jackson and Jesse Cleveland for Congress. The convention’s choice displeases some members and stirs heartburns.
The Southern Banner rebukes editorials praising Judge Clayton while defending its own position on the French Treaty. It asserts Clayton’s congressional record needed no vindication and challenges the Banner to publicly compare propositions and Senate votes for informed judgment.
A Boston Courier correspondent from Andover on June 23, 1835, shares his revised stance on colonization after northern prejudice seen in slavery debates. He notes his travel changes opinion and urges readers to consider accurate information on slavery’s effects and the broader social and economic implications. He remarks on abolitionists and colonizationists and urges attentive reading of the exchanged views.
Rev. Guiley of the American Colonization Society lectured at Mr. Badger's meeting-house on slavery and colonization, arguing the plan could unite North and South and aid Africa, while critics warned of dangers to the Union and questioned motives and outcomes of the movement.
Reports describe a tornado at New Brunswick causing at least 150 buildings destroyed or damaged and losses near 100 000 dollars. Serious injuries include Nicholas Wyckoff and others. a New York silversmith Thomas W Harper killed by a falling beam. A hail storm in Lancaster District caused extensive timber damage and ruined crops.
In Greenesborough on the 2d, Liam M. Mariin of Augusta married Julia G. Nicholson of Greenesborough, by Rev Mr Chappel. Also a death in the city on the 6th, William Tanta renne aged 55, a Virginian by birth and long time resident.
At the residence of A. Heggie in Columbia County on the 29th alt, Mr. Jonxy P. Foun formerly of Charleston aged 30 years four months leaves a wife and one child to mourn his loss.
The undersigned certify seventy five numbers were placed in the wheel for the Grand State Lottery Letra Class No 1 and list the drawn numbers in order: 35 9 33 2 66 68 88 36 69 71 46. The drawing occurred in Augusta on the th day of July 1835 as recorded in The Southern Agriculturist. The issue announces subscriptions and contents of the magazine published in Charleston, South Carolina with various agricultural topics and notices.
