The Sixtieth Anniversary of National Independence was celebrated in the city on Monday. A procession formed in front of the United States Hotel moved to the Presbyterian Church led by Marshal Joan Kean. Judge A B Lonesmerr read the Declaration, Rev Mr Sarria delivered an eloquent oration, and a crowded audience expressed satisfaction before the group returned to the United States Hotel and dispersed.
A Scriven county reader reports a forged marriage notice falsely claiming Mr. Claiborn Bevill wed Miss Patience Rushing via Rev. A T Dopson. The paper says Bevill is a married, respectable man and warns it will publish only verified signatures to prevent future forgeries. Also prints correspondence on Gov. Schley and Gen. Bailey, noting perceived unfair treatment of Gen. Bailey.
A lengthy critique argues Gov Scuter’s plan to place Gen Barner at command, alleging misstatements about pay and rank to justify his ultimate authority. The piece denounces the suggestion as insult to Gen Barner and questions Gov Scuter’s motives while detailing related political letters and wartime military decisions.
From the Dolphin at St Augustine details news of forts west of St Johns. Brevet Col Heileman died at Fort Crane on June 27. Out of 240 at the garrison 130 were sick and 5 of 8 officers ill. Fort King buildings burned by Indians. Baker county reports an Indian raid near Pattula and Cuthbert with multiple killings and a small force of 21 men defending, dire situation described by Captain Hentz in correspondence.
A long enumerated list of individuals and firms including Huntington Holcombe Bryson Baird Cooke Walker, Kerrs Hope Setze Beall Bastin Cumming Way Kneeland Parmelee Lattimer Clark Holcombe Peck Stovall Simmons Durand Kerrs Hope Allen Frederick Plant Bambert Holcombe Parrott and others arranged by dates July 2 and July 5.
The Augusta market shows near season end with reduced stocks and no arrivals. Prime cotton sold at 18 cents per lb, other qualities around 14 to 34 cents, a good lot at 17,4, and a bad lot at 13,4. Freight rates to Savannah 50 cents per bale, to Charleston 1 dollar. Ship arrivals and sales detailed, including upland quantities, prices from 14 to 20 cents, and on hand stock inclines from shipboard. Havre prices fluctuated with a brief rise then fall. first-hand stock totaled about 39,454 bales.
Market remains unchanged with last week’s rates. Cotton stocks show 1676 Long and 16584 Upland bales in store, 6745 uplands sold, 1800 to be shipped, leaving 9489 bales in first hands. Flour prices rise due to poor weather and tight supplies, with Howard Street wagon price at 7 dollars and various store quotes around 7.25 to 7.60 per barrel. Susquehanna Flour trades at 7.26 to 7.374 in quality.
