Military Enlistment Powers Extended five-year term
Congress authorises the President to enlist regiments for five years or the war, with pay and allowances matching existing law. Each enlisted man receives standard clothing forage and rations, and officers receive the usual pay and status. The act, signed by Speaker J B Varnum and President pro tempore James Madison, dates to January 28, 1874.
