Attica staged a thriving aviation day drawing about ten thousand spectators. The Curtiss aeroplane wowed crowds as it circled downtown including Riverside cemetery and the Wabash depot, with bands, parades, and decorations heightening the citywide celebration. The aviator agreed to a $50 downtown flight bonus to please spectators.
Lace McKinzie of Hamilton Ohio was beaten and robbed of about sixty dollars after meeting Gus Hill and associates on West Main Street Attica. Hill escaped into the river weeds after being cornered. town officers pursued but did not recapture him.
Elizabeth Alpha Borum and Grant Thomas Hollet wed in a Tuesday ceremony read by Dr. George W. Switzer. A piano recital preceded the service as Helen Borum served as maid of honor and Paul Knight carried daisies. After a two course breakfast the couple left for Chicago and Washington, D. C., to settle at 503 Trenton Avenue in Wilkesburg, Pa after July 15. Hollet, a Purdue engineering graduate, will teach motive power at Pittsburgh’s B and O railroad.
Otto Metzinger staying with daughter Mrs. Cliff Barger in Indianapolis is visiting friends in the city. Mrs. Theo Jeffries and Miss Helen Yeagy visited George Yeagy and wife. Mrs. Albert Carlson and children return to Carbondale after visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Carlson. Ed Haines of Roberts called here Sunday due to his father in law Cyrus Houts’s illness.
Williamsport and local businessmen planned an aviation day but the Capitan Bumbaugh representative failed to bring a plane, fueling speculation of a $450 payoff rumor. Attica merchants helped by arranging one flight so residents could still see an aeroplane, while other locals like David Leslie and Lawrence Hatton were noted visitors or locals in town.
Sometime Thursday night W E Stephens who ran the Lyric theater with his family departed Attica for unknown fields. M F Murphy Stephens brother in law took charge and will operate until a purchaser is found. Checks issued by Stephens bounced including eleven dollars at Will Lippold’s saloon and over thirteen dollars for the Danville Film company. Reports claim rent back three months on his house and business room plus other debts. The local moving picture business, crowded for some time, seems to be adjusting as vaudeville acts also left town amid unpaid bills.
A severe storm struck Odell Thursday afternoon causing major damage to buildings, trees, and crops. A mile of Odell telephone lines and the exchange pole were destroyed, with Bell lines damaged but later restored. No injuries were reported.
Cora Lou-Rena Dazey Browning daughter of Aaron G. and Dorcas Ann Dazey was born April 21 1878 and died June 22 1912 from tuberculosis. She lived on a Milford Illinois farm and later resided in Attica with husband Manford Browning and daughter Marguerite. Survived by husband two brothers two sisters and daughter and stepmother. The funeral was Monday with Rev. C W Postill delivering the address and burial at Riverside cemetery.
George Remster, a farm hand for Arthur Berry near State Line, was struck by lightning during a storm. He was found unconscious after the bolt paralyzed his right side and tore his shirt and trousers, leaving a toe torn from the foot, but he has since recovered enough to walk.
Miss Mary Jones daughter of Mr and Mrs J C Jones wed Dr D D McGillivary of Pine Village yesterday at 3 in the afternoon. Rev John A Ayling officiated in a simple ceremony attended by relatives and friends. The couple will honeymoon in Michigan then reside in Pine Village where the doctor plans a new cottage on a south town lot.
West Lebanon Gazette defends Attica resident J Frank McDermond of libel accusations over Capt Bumbaugh flight failure at Williamsport. The item asserts McDermond’s character is above reproach and condemns unfounded allegations. Also notes visits by Miss Ivy Thornton and Miss Allie Black to local residents.
On a poorly lit country road south of Hillsboro an automobile from Marshall driven by Clifford Banta veered off, overturned into a field, fatally injuring Miss Mabel Stockdale and badly injuring Miss Diantha Newlin. Banta’s passengers included Stockdale’s sweetheart, with Dr. Franklin McIntyre and the four returning from Kingman.
Rev. Andrew Berghult resigns from his dual role at the Swedish Lutheran churches in Danville and Danville Ill and plans a trial period starting September 1 to determine if the city church can operate with a pastor of its own.
A son was born Tuesday morning to John Haney and his wife of this city, adding a new member to the family.
