The annual gardening awards for the younger scout patrol were presented at Mrs. Mary Clapham’s home. Arthur Mahoney won first prize of 5 dollars, Paul Sullivan took second with 3 dollars, and Will Pearlman and Lorraine Lever shared 1.50 dollars each for third. Each participating scout received one dollar. The prize money is seed capital for business education, with boys required to keep accounts and submit them for review. One former prize winner already has 20 dollars from earlier capital.

Mrs Henry Collins died suddenly on Wednesday morning July 9 at her West Lebanon home from heart trouble. She was 56, had been ill years, but recently felt better. she told her son Peter of severe pain before dying. Survived by husband two sons Peter and Harry and two daughters Mrs Harry Ferguson and Miss Mary. Funeral held Friday at 10 from the family residence with Rev Father Oberholtz in charge.

Runaway Hay Wagon Wounds Man Near Hillsboro
Art Snider and a Ben Sutton son were injured when a wagon loaded with hay ran away on a hill west of Murdocks. Snider, attempting to help, drove a pitchfork into his leg and later leaped clear as the wagon toppled. The Sutton youth was unharmed.

Trace McCarty Injured In July Resort Accident
Trace McCarty formerly of this city lies in a Springfield Missouri hospital in a more or less serious condition after a Fourth of July mishap. A picnicking party from a local motorcycle club swam at a James river resort when he struck his head on a submerged stone fracturing his spine. He was unconscious and moved by ambulance to the city then considered seriously hurt but hoped to recover with rest. Also noted is the recent fire that damaged his boot and shoe shop and the couple’s planned motorcycle trip home to Attica.

At a congregational meeting the Presbyterian church extended a formal call to Rev. H. M. Hildebrandt to become pastor of Attica church which has been without a pastor since January. Hildebrandt, then in Petersburg Illinois, visited Attica July 5 and preached twice. he indicated willingness to consider and likely accept an official call. He is a young, unmarried preacher with high honors from McCormick Seminary and European study fellowship. The congregation is eager to have him, and a formal call was issued last night.

Poor Farm Hogs Bring Top Market Price
Sam Sowers, superintendent of the county farm, sold forty four hogs raised on the farm last week. The hogs averaged 250 pounds and brought the top price of 8.40 per hundredweight, netting near $1,000 which was turned into the county treasury. He has a fine batch of smaller pigs feeding.
