A string of marriages unfolds in Lafayette, Paris, Danville, and Attica as couples wed during the holiday season. Notable unions include Mabel E. Bender and Robert H. Funk in Lafayette, Rene Sheridan and William Salliday in Paris, Ina Ribble and D. F. Roe in Danville, and Beatrice Nave to Clement B. Isley in Attica.
Orlando M. Mills and Miss Marie Gookins were married Sunday afternoon by Rev. Owen Wright of the Veedersburg Methodist church. Mills has lived in Sterling for two years and is well regarded. Marie is the bride, youngest daughter of her family.
Lemuel McClamroch a Benton County farmer filed suit in Benton Circuit Court against James D. Clark of Fowler seeking 2000 damages for injuries from a collision last fall when Clark's car struck McClamroch's buggy on the Crawfordsville pike. The crash just before the Montgomery County fair left McClamroch with a broken hip and he claims Clark was negligent in attempting to pass two buggies at once in the same direction creating a dangerous passing maneuver.
Mrs John McKee traveled from Chicago to inspect the Jordan home after a fire on Christmas Day which left part of the residence ruined. Miss Louise followed on Wednesday evening to assist.
Mrs Tony Schmid celebrated New Year’s Day with relatives in Lafayette, sharing a quiet family gathering and well wishes for the upcoming year.
Obituary notes Mrs. Susan Schermerhorn Bacon aged 83 died at her son E. E. Orr’s home after a four week decline. She was active in Eastern Star and G A R circles and served as memorial speaker for the Ladies of the G A R. Born in Schenectady New York January 1 1829 she moved to Indiana with her family in 1842. Funeral services were held at the Judy residence with burial in Riverside cemetery.
Mrs Elizabeth Judy widow of Benjamin Judy a pioneer of central Warren county died at 9 25 Monday night at her son I A Judy’s home in this city where she had lived four years She suffered cancer and age and mental worry over finances worsened her condition A Lafayette suit ten months earlier challenged her mental competence and heirs argued over her property The court later appointed W N Foster guardian after an earlier visit to her home left her unable to manage affairs The court case and guardianship weighed heavily on her health
Mrs Hester Bartlett a longtime Attica resident died at 4 00 pm at her Park avenue home after a prolonged illness Her devoted son John Hoffman cared for her with the loyalty of a lover She leaves James Hoffman of Buffalo Center Oklahoma and Mrs Laura Martindale of Los Angeles Burial will be at Mound cemetery southeast of Pine Village Born October 22 1840 she was 72 years old
Mrs Mary Jones aged 63 wife of Lewis Jones died at home three miles south of Rainsville on December 24 after a two year illness. Born August 29 1861 in Warren county she was a daughter of Robi Martin and Sarah Martin. Funeral by Rev A C Northrup at the family residence followed by burial in Rainsville cemetery. She is survived by her husband two children Robert H and Bessie, and her parents three brothers David John Henry and sister Nancy Martin.
Mrs Anna Shewey age 61, mother of Dr C W Shewey, died at the doctor's Ravine Park boulevard residence from heart failure. Her Rushville Ind home is shipping the body there for burial. She had helped care for her daughter in law and had been ill since Friday.
County Chairman Frank Macoughtry sold 32 tickets to the Jackson club banquet at Lafayette Monday night among Fountain and Warren county democrats. Attendees from the vicinity included Will Willet, Will H Young, William Wolfe, J D Trott, John Seree, Levi Shuppert, J W Reece, John Potter, Thomas Marr, Ed Houts, Ed Haines, Sam French, J W Harrison, Jesse Funk, Clint Florey, Lew French, Will Finfrock, Geo Feuerstein, Jonathan Davis, John Feuerstein, John Auter, Chet Berthhin, Clint Butler, and Frank Macoughtry.
The county commissioners have been in session since the day after Christmas closing up last year. They will hold the first meeting of the new year on next Monday.
Grace Smith an 18 year old daughter of Wesley Smith died from severe burns after tripping on stairs at Emmet Crose’s home. The lamp shattered spilling kerosene on clothing starting a blaze that Mrs. Crose battled with rugs water and help from Drs Pugh and Porter. Limited hope remained as burns covered neck face shoulders chest and back with eye lids burned and possible inhalation injury. She had been serving as a maid at the time and was moved to her parents home as she weakened overnight.
James C. Dinsmore elected first vice-president of the Chicago Poultry Show association after the death of Irving A. Sibley. Dinsmore known for Hillcrest louse exterminator expands business and recently bought out a partner. The Clarks and Ralph Foster spent New Year’s in Danville with Robert Clark.
The parcels post began countrywide use Wednesday morning. Chas W Zeigler mailed the first Attica parcel, with several more on the morning mail. Special stamps exist in nine designs. one cent shows a clerk, two cent a city carrier, four rural carrier, five cent fast train, ten cent steamship, fifteen cent auto wagon, twenty cent airship, twenty five cent factory scene, dollar stamp a fruitgrowing scene. Postage due stamps also issued in 1 2 3 10 and 25 cents without pictures.
Oz Murthie former Attica boy becomes Grant county treasurer and will hold a New Year open house at the Marion courthouse on January 1. The office opens at midnight and will be open all day with a barrel of apples on tap and branded cigars for guests as supporters celebrate his election victory.
In DeSelms window a 60 hour burn candle attracted nearly a thousand estimates. Dan Shuppert correctly estimated within three and a half minutes and won ten dollars in gold. Mrs. Dan Young was next with 60 hours 30 minutes 40 seconds. Young girls and boys won dolls and a toy motion picture machine for top boys.
Mellott endures an epidemic with one death and seventeen new diphtheria cases. Over fifty exposures are noted as authorities order school disinfection and a strict quarantine. Miss Florence Peck leaves Terre Haute to teach grade four at Attica High. her sister Misa Ennice also will not return.
The National Car Coupler plant was sold for 90000 in Chicago with H L Bailey acting for the new firm. J W Harrison holds a controlling stock interest and will guide future development. A 99 year charter and forthcoming stockholder meeting set next week to finalize organization and plans.
The piece says Judge Schoonover plans to retire after his term and that attorney V E Livengood sits as special judge during the six weeks absence in California. Attys say Livengood has proven himself fit for the bench and likely will receive party leaders united support at the next judicial convention.

Miss Carrie Harbaugh hosted a Thursday afternoon gathering for Miss Adah Hayes of Minneapolis who is visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Reed. Hayes later entertained the same group Thursday evening at the Reed home.
