An overheated electric iron ignited the ironing board in the dressmaking dept starting a fire on the second floor of McDermond’s department store. Fire alarms were raised minutes before 11 pm by Night Officer Moore and others, volunteers helped lay lines, and the blaze was quickly extinguished with minimal stock damage. J Frank Jr took command inside, and janitor Hicks Kittle helped avert further damage by removing water and ensuring the iron was cooled before the store opened.
