Hunter Trial in Frankfort Characterized by Perjury Charges
In Frankfort Kentucky on September 18 the Hunter trial concluded a day of sworn contradictions between Hunter ex congressman J H Wilcox and Deputy E T Franks on one side and Captain Noel Gaines and Thomas F Tanner on the other. Gaines and Tanner place Hunter at Gaines house and allege votes were bought while Hunter denies knowing Gaines or his residence. Several legislators and friends corroborate Hunter while Gaines and Tanner back their own version. Witnesses on both sides dispute terms of negotiations involving Wilson Franks and Gaines. A hung jury seems likely as fear of clashes grows and neither side has proven Governor Bradley conspired to indict Hunter though he opposed Hunter’s Senate bid.

Western railroads debate equalizing Omaha to Chicago rates amid a growing drive to set a seven dollar fare from Kansas City. The Chicago St Paul meeting failed to decide but officials warn demoralization unless a Western conference acts. Burlington adds five dollar commissions for California routes, signaling broader rate shifts. Utah plans a major 8,000 foot exhibit space across mining, agriculture and manufactures.
