The Liberty Bell special arrived at Chicago Union Depot Friday night to an enthusiastic crowd cheering Old Liberty and Mayor Stuart of Philadelphia. Philadelphia and Chicago officials led a grand escort, with fireworks lighting the sky, as the train stopped at multiple towns en route to Indianapolis. The bell will be moved to a truck for a procession to the World’s Fair grounds with militia, officials, and civic groups in attendance.

Jefferson City, April 29. Jim Smith, a Lewis county convict in the Missouri penitentiary harness shop, suddenly attacked guard J. W. Tucker with a concealed knife during lineup. Tucker died after six wounds, including a kidney hit and a shoulder blade stab. Nate Hill restrained Smith before further harm. Smith had been disciplined weeks prior and waited for revenge.

Elisha Roe born November 13 1814 in Chenango New York dies April 19 1893 at the home of his son in law J G Robinson Lincoln township Cass county aged 79 He was one of sixteen children eleven reached maturity three brothers survive He moved from New York to Delaware County Iowa in 1858 then to McDonough County Illinois in 1864 and to Cass county in 1875 He lived near Wiota thirteen years He was married four times four sons and three daughters survive with Daniel and Mrs Robinson present at funeral He joined the Baptist church at sixteen and remained a steadfast member He was abolitionist and later a prohibitionist The obituary notes he died full of years and was gathered to his people.
