Attempted assassination of Li Hung Chang shocks world

Sunday law to be enforced in St Louis by liquor dealers

In St Louis the Sunday law will be enforced strictly under section 8852 of Missouri statutes. Warrants have been issued to halt Sunday work, including ar rest efforts against John Scuilin, president of Union Depot Railway, for Sunday construction on Grand Avenue branch. The Liquor Dealers association and supporters vow broad prosecutions while the Sabbath Observation society stays aloof. The court will determine what constitutes necessary Sunday work.

Old Timer Dies and Other Briefs from Pomeroy

William W. Hubbell, 73, died in Pomeroy. His family traced early Meige county salt works and a Marietta to New Orleans steamboat route. He journeyed to California in 1850. His grandfathers fought in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. School Notes Show Library Drive and Attendance Rise

Massena schools principal Mr. Smith visited the eighth grade last Friday. Miss Graham of Lewis now teaching at Lorimer called at Central school. A movement to place a library in every building to aid geography language and reading has begun with books loaned by teachers and others from the Central school library. February attendance comparisons show gains from 1894 to 1895 with 1001 average daily attendance and 1044 belonging. The ninth grade explores latin and botany with new studies.

Hero saves train switch in Vermillion bridge tale

An old railroad man recalls a silent hero on the Michigan Southern line who averted a deadly wreck by snapping a bridge switch just as a fast freight approached. He acted to spare the coaches and engines, but kept his deed secret to avoid jeopardizing his place. The tale ends with the hero never being acknowledged.
