Animated Senate Debate Over Bering Sea Differences

Washington March 2 animated debate in the senate followed a proposed amendment by Mr Cockrell to a deficiency bill. He sought 50000 for another arbitration committee to settle Canadian sealers seized by the United States. Senator Sherman opposed reopening the dispute calling it dishonorable and unwise. Senator Morgan, a former arbirtration commissioner, warned a 428000 payment would disgrace the United States. Cockrell withdrew the amendment as the bill moved forward, while California Oregon and Nevada claims totaling five million were approved. Also passed were 1809000 for the Southern Pacific railroad and about 1000000 for French spoilation and war claims. Encomiums were offered for the late Representative Lisle.
