Railroad Must Pay $25020 in Stone Estate Case
In a landmark ruling, the C R I & P railroad company was ordered to pay 25020 plus costs to R C Pratt administrator of W H Stone’s estate for Stone’s death near Anita Iowa in March 18. The five year legal battle saw trials in Cass County and appeals to the Iowa Supreme Court, with Swan Bruce representing the plaintiff and Chicago counsel for the railroad. The case hinged on whether the fright of Stone’s horses caused the accident, a point ultimately sustained by the high court after multiple reversals and retrials. The judgment totals over six thousand dollars, marking one of the state’s largest verdicts against the railroad.
