The Glorious Day Balloon Ascension Fails Amid Rain

A large Fourth of July crowd endured morning rain that delayed the parade until 2 p.m. The Atlantic cornet band led the procession with fire and rescue wagons, prize contests, and a grand oration by Judge Walter I. Smith. The balloon ascent failed to reach expected height due to breeze. fireworks and fairs drew large crowds, while police raids closed bootlegging joints and city plans updated jail vaults and park rules.
