Destruction of Spanish Fleet at Santiago Reported

Washington reports on the July Fourth victory as Commodore Watson and Admiral Sampson lead a crushing defeat of Cervera and the Spanish fleet near Santiago de Cuba. Shafter demands surrender by noon, while a bustling White House tracks rapid dispatches and honors.

Glorious Victory Ends Spanish Fleet at Santiago Harbor

Admiral Cervera's squadron breaks from Santiago de Cuba harbor and is destroyed by U S ships off the Cuban coast. Cristobal Colon Vizcaya and Oquendo suffer wrecks with many killed or captured. Gloucester and American ships press fire and take prisoners while Morro batteries and heavy guns pound the fleeing cruisers. One American, George H. Ellis of Brooklyn, is killed.
