Majority favor gold bonds and Senate moves on finance
Washington reports show party lines solidifying as the Ways and Means majority backs a gold bond plan to replenish the treasury reserve. Minority leaders Bryan and Whiting oppose pledging debt specifically in gold and warn against changing existing bond terms. A Sherman substitute for coinage reform proposes 3 percent gold bonds payable in five years to maintain the gold standard amid debate on public finance.

Aday s Testimony Corroborated in Hayward Murder Trial
In Minneapolis on February 1 the murder trial of Harry Hayward neared its end as the state produced key testimony. Pater Vallaire, a hack driver, confirmed parts of the alleged plot and said Hayward asked if he would drown a passenger for pay. Vallaire testified he was asked if he would drive the hack into Lake Calhoun and let the occupant drown for money. The testimony severely undermined the defense, while Hayward appeared unfazed.
